INVESTIGATION SITE: The public chair of yard
LOCATION: LONDON, SW9 9jf

Appearance of the chair:

Size:

Angle:

It’s a chair that’s not parallel to the floor.

Expanded Space:

Invisible expansion space (space for people to move around in chairs)

Marks/Maintenance/Details:

Interior:

Rubbish that has been deliberately thrown in.

3D Scans:

The environment around the chair:

Views around the chair:

Experience of myself

I captured some video on my mobile phone on the floor opposite the chair.
I waited a long time and no one was sitting in the chair.
So I tried to experience the chair for myself.

Views

I photographed what I saw in different sitting positions. As well as a panoramic view of my surroundings.

Interaction between people and chairs

Then a group of people came, chatting in chairs, smoking cigarettes, sharing pictures.

Reflections:

I got to thinking about their behaviour.
What influences or determines people’s behaviour in chairs?
What is a chair to people?

I wanted the project to stimulate a new form of design-thinking and to provoke debate about the value, functionality and the appropriateness of style for certain types of chair. What happens to the status and potential of a plastic garden chair when it is upholstered with luxurious yellow suede? The approach is elastic, highlighting the importance of contextual origin and enabling the creative potential of random individual elements spontaneously thrown together. The process of personal action that leads towards making rather than hesitating.

Explorations:

I try to explore and imagine the identity, the content, the possibilities between the chair and its environment and people’s interaction with it.

Take elements from the chair itself and its surroundings. And arranging them, randomly enlarging them.

I tried to make some changes to the chair, mainly in colour and material.

I also treated the chair as a solid colour plane,
or filled it with some background,
some attempts at transparency.
Place them in different contexts.

Some attempts to add characters.
Some attempts at text layout
